    • On the agenda at Barnet town meeting. I need a talking points datasheet so I can clearly explain what’s changed, the effects on elections so far, and the process for amending the constitution. Also, should be coordinated with Bernie Sanders office as he already has a bill in Congress, or at least be able to explain what’s happening with his bill.

  1. Hello,

Although I phoned or e-mailed the following to Aquene a week or so ago, South Burlington still isn’t shown on both as being part of your web-site and in aquene’s e-mails, we have an active effort here in South Burlington, led by me, Rick Hubbard, with lots of cooperation and assistance from others.

To date we’ve gathered over 650 signatures, (target is 700) and we expect to present these to our South Burlington City clerk by our deadline, next Thursday, January 26th to be double-checked. The next step after that is to request our City Council to place it on our March 6th Town Meeting ballot. If they agree to do this they will replace a long-standing historical precedent of never placing anything on the ballot that is not narrowly focused on specific South Burlington affairs.

Thanks for addint this information to both the website and e-mails.

    Cheers!

    Rick

  2. The Brandon selectboard decided that they would not allow this on the Town ballot. I am considering bringing something up at the Town Meeting, but could use some guidance….anyone have ideas? some kind of nonbinding resolution that we could send to our congressional representatives? Thanks. Sue Gage

  3. South Burlington Petition Drive Update

South Burlington conducted a petition drive the past three weeks to place an item on the Town Meeting Day ballot pertaining to the U.S. Supreme Court decision known as Citizens United, in which the High Court held that corporations are people and that the contribution of money is the equivalent of speech.

Nearly 1000 signatures were gathered by a troupe of 43 South Burlington residents.

On Wednesday, January 25, the City Council voted, 3 to 1, to place the issue on the ballot. This means that all South Burlington voters will have the opportunity to think about, discuss, and vote on the following Resolution:

In light of the United States Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision that equates money with speech and gives corporations rights constitutionally intended for natural persons, shall the city of South Burlington vote on March 6, 2012 to urge the Vermont Congressional Delegation and the U.S. Congress to propose a U.S. Constitutional amendment for the States’ consideration which provides that money is not speech, and that corporations are not persons under the U.S. Constitution, that the General Assembly of the State of Vermont pass a similar resolution, and that the town send its resolution to Vermont State and Federal representatives within thirty days of passage of this measure?

Many thanks to all who participated in the petition drive and to the City Council for allowing all South Burlington voters the opportunity to weigh in on this important issue.
